This lens really is the bees knees! Being a pro, I always look at what kit can give me good quality. I do a lot of product shoots, and had been using the (old but excellent) Sigma 105 2.8. I had the pre image stabilised version, and was getting increasingly frustrated with the speed at which it focused, and the constant hunting whenever my focal point was not bang in the center of the frame. It meant I was missing the odd shot as the focus was slightly out. The Nikon lens is, admittedly, nearly twice the price of the Sigma, but it is an amazing piece of glass. Super quick to focus every time, and it is built like a tank - all metal and very, very solid. It is crazy sharp and a very flattering portrait/macro lens. As with my old Sigma, the lens breathes quite a bit, so sometimes you get the framing slightly wrong once focus is locked in...but after a few shoots you wil get the hang of it; if you're not sure, just go a little wider and crop in.
In summary, I cannot speak highly enough of this lens. It is a great addition to the kit bag; both for macro and portrait, and the extra money is well and truly worth it!
